2016 Olympic Park Design Competition, Rio De Janeiro

The city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's Architects Institute put out an international call for the masterplan for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park. AECOM's winning submission was selected, in blind entry, out of 60 entries from firms in 18 countries.

The design sought inspiration from the city's elements, building on the experience gained in developing the masterplan for London's 2012 Games, grounded in a strategy that looked at long-term usage.

The design imagines a new relationship between built form and environment based on sport, recreation, sustainability and ecology. A key element was communicating a vision that was understanding of Rio and captured the energy and excitement of the Games as a long-term catalyst for Rio's emergence.

This scheme is AECOM's response to City of Rio de Janeiro's open call competition for the design of the Olympic Park that will be the primary cluster of venues for the 2016 Olympic Games.
