Chelsea Barracks

The site prior to redevelopment was a garrison with little environmental value, other than the defining protected mature Plane trees of Chelsea Bridge Road. Across a 12 acre site, the masterplan intially developed by Kim Wilkie, encompasses 5 acres of public open space. Gustafson Porter + Bowman were engaged by Qatari Diar in 2013 to build on the initial concept of garden squares, and reimagine them as modern public spaces.

The Barracks have been redeveloped into high-end private housing with ground level commercial activty stiching it into the adjacent Pimlico streetscape. The refined architecture, developed by Squires + Partners and PDP, provides a cohesive setting that sensitively respond to the historic context of the area. Chelsea Barracks Phase 1 was completed in 2019, and first new public spaces - Whistler Square / Dove Place / Mulberry Square and Bourne Walk - were opened to the public the week of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. To mark the occasion, and in collaboration with Jo Thompson, a special planting palette was conceived so that each garden was as vibrant and full as the show gardens at the flower show. The phasing of the development will further deliver a range of new garden squares and landscapes that create a cotinuous pubilc realm from Pimlico through to Ebury Bridge Road.
