Normand Park

The Normand Park project team worked with the local community to create an innovative, high quality green space that reflects the character and history of the area and serves a mixed community with a range of income and ethnic groups. The design philosophy therefore had a key objective to involve local people in the design of the park. The design team especially wanted to include activities for young people that they identify as theirs, placed in the heart of the park. Play in general is viewed as an inclusive activity for all ages.

Different character areas were created to express the use of different spaces held together by two routes. The North-South route through the park, 'The Broadwalk' is an extension of the pavement and creates a long floral square. This square can host fairs and markets and can be a meeting place for the community. The East-West route is less direct and is designed as a Play Path between two schools and the pool.

The project highlights the qualities of the existing trees on site through an arts project which uses light to transform them visually.

On the north-south route a shot-blasted floral decorative pattern was etched into the paving whilst the east-west link is a play path where archways are created using lighting columns and trees.Stepping stones and balancing beams are integrated into the street furniture. The play area includes water features, sand pits, timber play equipment, climbing walls, rubberised surface, ping pong tables, and a bmx area.
