Silloth Green

Established in parallel with the Victorian town of Silloth, The Green occupies a dramatic location on the West Cumbrian coast with spectacular views over the Solway Firth. Southern Green successfully prepared a Stage Two HLF bid for the restoration of this historic coastal park. This included arranging a series of public consultation events to engage with the local community, which helped establish a new ‘friends’ group to encourage local residents to participate in the future management and maintenance of the area.

Works included the implementation of a range of restoration works and new features, including: the restoration of a 19th century timber pagoda; restoration of an Edwardian ladies’ toilet block; improvements to existing mature tree and shrub plantations; creation of a new town garden and the restoration of a 1950s rose garden. Two exciting new play spaces were also created. A stimulating new woodland play area was developed within a C19th pine plantation, whilst the historic former paddling pool site was transformed into an exciting new contemporary water play area offering a variety of interactive play features. These additions have proven hugely successful with children of all ages, especially during the summer months.

Works were completed and celebrated with a grand opening in May 2012, which attracted huge crowds. The Friends of Silloth Green have continued to develop and care for the park, which is now host to several annual events and festivals.
