Stewart Park

This project initially required comprehensive research and analysis of Stewart Park, a process involving around 20 specialists working with the council team. This provided an in depth understanding of the development and significance of the park and the community it serves and informed a phased masterplan of works. Whilst a popular resource, the park had lacked investment over the years and was in decline. The council's vision was to restore the park's great heritage and dynamically increase the whole visitor experience.

The improved park would celebrate the achievements of its great forebears, Captain Cook, Henry Bolckow and Councillor Stewart, displaying the imaginative drive of the people that made Middlesbrough great to local, national and international visitors alike and showcasing artistic, environmental and technological innovation. The Stewart Park project is special because it has safeguarded a magnificent designed landscape, a rare and precious survival within the urban sprawl of Middlesbrough, which can now be cherished by future generations.

Sustainable uses have been found for the fine Victorian stable yard complex, transforming a previously neglected council depot into a vibrant new resource for the park with community needs firmly at its heart.
