The Restoration of Cassiobury Park

Watford Borough Council commissioned LUC as lead consultant on the regeneration of Cassiobury Park, a popular open space in the heart of Watford.

The Heritage Lottery Funded scheme aimed to restore and celebrate this multi-layered landscape rich in history. A fascinating amalgam of former deer park, 18th and 19thcentury picturesque parkland and 20thcentury ‘Peoples’ Park’ overlay – model railway, Art Deco tearooms and water play facilities – aspects of Cassiobury Park’s heritage had become lost and it had suffered much wear and tear due to its considerable popularity.

We restored surviving historic features such as the monumental Lime Avenue, carriage drives and estate watermill ruins; recreated iconic features of the picturesque parkland such as the tea pavilion and gardens, reinstated the Bandstand and completely refurbished the popular water play area, allied to a new contemporary park hub building.

The project has won multiple awards, including a 2018 Landscape Institute Award in the Heritage & Conservation category.
