The copper clad buildings are raised on a tough exposed concrete plinth, above flood levels, with extensive areas of gravel surfacing referencing the site's history of stone extraction from the lake bed.
Jetties, slipways and a working boatyard serve the museum, while the wider landscape comprises a more agricultural aesthetic with gently mounded meadows and vegetated drainage swales, which take car park and field run-off to a reedbed.
Herbaceous planting within the wetland and gravel areas forms delicate counterpoint to the tough materiality of the museum complex.
Further features include a model boating pond, picnic area, woodland planting and a play boat for children.
Works commenced on site in 2015 and completed in 2019.
